Direct liquid cooling removes heat from processors and other server components by circulating a liquid coolant directly to the heat source, either through cold plates mounted on chips or by immersing complete boards in dielectric fluid. This report covers cold plate direct-to-chip systems, single-phase and two-phase immersion approaches, and the supporting component ecosystem of coolant distribution units, manifolds, quick disconnects, engineered coolants, and immersion tanks deployed across hyperscale, colocation, enterprise, HPC, and edge facilities.
The technology is moving from niche to mainstream because accelerator thermal design power has outgrown what air can economically remove: chips dissipating well over a kilowatt and racks exceeding one hundred kilowatts leave operators little alternative to liquid. Direct-to-chip cold plates dominate near-term deployments since they retrofit into existing rack architectures and are now specified by major server platforms at the factory, while immersion adoption concentrates where extreme density or harsh environments justify a full facility redesign. Water usage restrictions and heat-reuse regulation in Europe are further tilting facility design toward closed-loop liquid systems, and the phase-out pressure on certain fluorinated fluids is redirecting two-phase immersion research toward alternative chemistries.
North America is the largest deployment base given its concentration of AI training capacity, while Asia Pacific grows quickly on new hyperscale builds and government HPC programmes; Nordic and continental European sites lead in heat-recovery-integrated designs. The supplier landscape blends thermal specialists, large power-and-cooling incumbents that have acquired their way in, and fluid chemistry providers, and remains only moderately consolidated.
