The carbon capture and utilization market covers technologies that separate carbon dioxide from industrial flue gases, process streams and ambient air, and then convert the recovered molecule into saleable products rather than consigning it solely to geological disposal. The scope spans post-combustion solvent and sorbent systems, pre-combustion capture integrated with gasification, oxy-fuel combustion, direct air capture, and the downstream conversion routes that mineralise CO2 into aggregates and cured concrete, upgrade it catalytically or biologically into methanol, syngas-derived chemicals and polymer precursors, or inject it for enhanced oil recovery.
Demand is being pulled forward by mechanisms that put a price or a penalty on emitted carbon: the tightening EU Emissions Trading System and its carbon border adjustment, Section 45Q tax credits in the United States, and low-carbon product procurement rules that reward cement and concrete with embedded CO2. Because cement, steel and chemicals generate process emissions that cannot be removed by fuel switching alone, capture paired with a revenue-generating utilization route is one of the few decarbonisation levers available to these industries.
Structurally, the industry is moving from bespoke engineering projects toward modular, factory-built capture units, while CO2-cured concrete and mineralised aggregates have become the most commercially advanced utilization outlets. North America leads on incentive depth and existing CO2 pipeline and EOR infrastructure, Europe on regulatory pressure in cement and chemicals, and Asia Pacific is scaling demonstration projects in China and Japan. The competitive field is fragmented, mixing industrial gas majors, EPC contractors and venture-backed capture and conversion specialists.
