The silicon photonics market comprises photonic devices and integrated circuits fabricated on silicon and silicon-on-insulator wafers using CMOS-compatible processes. Coherent transmission for metro and long-haul networks, FMCW LiDAR and evanescent-field biosensors broaden the application base.
North America leads in chip design and hyperscaler procurement, while Taiwan, Japan and China dominate wafer processing, assembly and module manufacture; European research institutes and specialty foundries sustain a strong prototyping ecosystem. Competition mixes vertically integrated incumbents with venture-backed optical interconnect specialists relying on the foundry model.
