A Gifford McMahon Cryocooler, also called a GM Cryocooler, is a closed cycle regenerative cryogenic refrigerator that uses helium as the working gas and produces refrigeration through cyclic pressure variation, gas displacement, regenerative heat exchange, and expansion in a cold head. The system consists of a helium compressor, high pressure and low pressure helium lines, a rotary or timing valve, a cold head, a displacer, a regenerator, heat exchangers, and one or more cold stages. The compressor supplies pressurized helium to the cold head and receives return helium after expansion, allowing continuous cryogenic refrigeration without liquid cryogen consumption.
The refrigeration process is governed by repeated admission and exhaust of helium in the expansion space. High pressure helium enters the cold head, passes through the regenerator, and is displaced toward the cold end. The valve then connects the expansion space to the low pressure side, causing the helium to expand and absorb heat from the cold stage. During reverse flow, the regenerator stores and returns heat between successive cycles, improving thermodynamic efficiency and enabling steady cooling at cryogenic temperatures.
A GM cryocooler is commonly configured as a single stage or two stage machine. Single stage units are used for cooling in the tens of kelvin range. Two stage units can provide a first stage for radiation shield cooling and a second stage for lower temperature loads, including the 4 K class in specialized designs. Its mechanical architecture gives high refrigeration capacity, robust continuous operation, and direct integration with cryostats, cryopumps, superconducting magnets, MRI systems, detectors, and low temperature laboratory instruments.
