Gifford McMahon Joule Thomson cryocooler is a hybrid closed cycle helium refrigeration machine that combines Gifford McMahon precooling with Joule Thomson expansion to provide comparatively high refrigeration capacity near the normal boiling temperature of helium. High pressure helium from the compressor circuit is first cooled through the regenerative stages of a Gifford McMahon cold head and through a counterflow recuperative heat exchanger. After sufficient precooling, the helium passes through a Joule Thomson restriction, where isenthalpic expansion produces additional cooling and partial liquefaction near 4.2 K. The resulting cold helium absorbs heat from a solid cold stage or condenses helium vapor from an external vessel. Low pressure helium then returns through the recuperative heat exchanger, recovering cold before reentering the compressor circuit. The system consists principally of helium compressors, a Gifford McMahon precooling cold head, regenerators, recuperative heat exchangers, a Joule Thomson valve or restriction, a phase separation or recondensing interface and associated controls. The Joule Thomson section contains no moving expansion mechanism at the coldest point. Stage type systems provide a conductive cold surface, while recondensing systems return condensed helium directly to an attached cryostat, magnet vessel or helium reservoir.
