Gifford McMahon Type Pulse Tube Cryocooler, also called a GM Type Pulse Tube Cryocooler, is a closed cycle regenerative cryogenic refrigerator that uses helium as the working gas and a Gifford McMahon pressure switching mechanism to drive oscillating gas flow through a regenerator and a pulse tube. Its core structure consists of a helium compressor, a rotary valve or timing valve, a regenerator, a pulse tube, warm and cold heat exchangers, an inertance tube or phase control element, and a buffer volume.
The cooling process is produced by periodic helium compression and expansion inside the pulse tube. The regenerator stores and releases heat between gas flow cycles, while the phase relationship between pressure and mass flow creates net refrigeration at the cold heat exchanger. The cold end contains no mechanical displacer, which gives the machine lower vibration and reduced mechanical disturbance at the cryogenic stage compared with conventional GM displacer cold heads.
GM type pulse tube cryocoolers are commonly used for low vibration cryogenic cooling in superconducting magnets, cryostats, detector systems, quantum and low temperature physics instruments, semiconductor equipment, and other systems requiring stable cooling from the tens of kelvin range down to the 4 K class.
