Mixed refrigerant cryocooler is a closed cycle refrigeration system that uses a multicomponent refrigerant with deliberately selected boiling points, vapor pressures and phase equilibrium properties to generate cooling over a broad temperature range and reach cryogenic temperatures with a conventional mechanical compressor. The refrigerant mixture is compressed, aftercooled and progressively condensed as it passes through separators and counterflow heat exchangers. Different components evaporate and condense at different temperatures, creating a distributed refrigeration effect and a continuous temperature glide. In an autocascade system, successive condensation, separation and internal evaporation stages reproduce the thermal function of a multistage cascade within a single refrigerant circuit. In a mixed refrigerant Joule Thomson system, the precooled high pressure mixture is throttled through a restriction at the cold head, partially evaporates and absorbs heat from the load before returning through the recuperative heat exchanger. The coldest section may contain no moving mechanical components, allowing the compressor to be positioned remotely from the cooled object. System performance depends on refrigerant composition, pressure ratio, phase distribution, heat exchanger effectiveness and control of oil and contaminants.
